The Shaanxi History Museum is one of China’s most prestigious museums, housing a collection of 370,000 artifacts spanning from prehistoric times to the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its Shang and Zhou dynasty bronze ware, Han and Tang dynasty gold and silverware, and Tang dynasty murals are unparalleled worldwide. The “Treasures of the Tang Dynasty” exhibition hall displays over 1,000 rare and precious Tang dynasty artifacts unearthed from the Hejia Village hoard.

If the Terracotta Army is Xi’an’s star attraction, the Shaanxi History Museum is its true cultural heart. It’s a top-tier museum with free admission, and the treasures inside are far more impressive than those at many “attractions” charging 200 yuan.

The “Treasures of the Tang Dynasty” exhibition is a must-see
The gold-inlaid agate cup with an animal-head handle and the gilded silver jug with a dancing horse holding a cup—both unearthed from the Hejiazun hoard—the finest gold and silver artifacts of the Tang Dynasty are all here.
Common Mistakes
❌ Went without a reservation
I thought “free” meant I could walk in anytime.
Consequence: You absolutely cannot get in without a reservation. This is one of the hardest free museums in China to book.

Best Time to Visit
Morning session during operating hours. Secure tickets 7 days in advance—they sell out instantly during peak season. If you can’t get a reservation, you can purchase a ticket for the “Treasures of the Tang Dynasty” special exhibition (30 yuan) to gain entry.
