The Xi’an City Wall is China’s largest and best-preserved ancient city wall, built during the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty. It is 13.7 kilometers long, 12 meters high, and 12–14 meters wide at the top—wide enough for four cars to drive side by side. Yongning Gate (the South Gate) is the most spectacular main gate.

Cycling around the city wall is one of Xi’an’s most unique experiences. The full circuit is 13.7 kilometers long and takes about 2 hours to complete. Climb the wall at dusk to watch the sunset cast its glow on the eaves of the ancient city; when the sounds of the bells and drums ring out, you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported back to the Tang Dynasty.
Tips for Visitors
Be sure to rent a bicycle
It’s impossible to walk the entire circuit of the city wall (13.7 kilometers!). Single bikes are 45 yuan for 3 hours; tandem bikes are 90 yuan.
Common Mistakes
❌ Go up on the city wall at noon
It’s scorching hot on the city walls at midday in summer.
Consequence: There is no shade on the city wall, and temperatures can reach over 40°C at midday.
