🏛️ What It Is

Hongyadong is Chongqing’s most iconic landmark—a cluster of stilted houses built into the mountainside, with 11 stories of traditional-style architecture suspended from the cliff. After dark, when the lights come on (around 7:00 PM), it feels like stepping into the fantastical world of Hayao Miyazaki’s *Spirited Away*. Starting in 2025, advance reservations via the official WeChat account will be required (free).

✨ Why Visit

Chongqing’s most photogenic scene. You must visit at night—during the day, it’s just an ordinary traditional-style building, but once the lights come on at night, that’s when the magic happens. The best spot for photos is in the middle section of the Qiansimen Bridge.

Tips for Visitors

Skip the elevator line and take the Dai Jia Xiang walking path

The elevator line gets extremely long after 4:00 PM. Take the 8-minute walk up the Daijia Alley footpath instead.

Call a ride on the 11th floor, not the 1st floor

The 1st floor of Hongyadong is by the river, while the 11th floor is at street level. If you hail a taxi on the 1st floor, the driver won’t be able to find you. Walk up to the 11th floor and then order a Didi.

Common Mistakes

Hailing a ride on the 1st floor

Hailing a ride on the 1st floor of Hongyadong by the river.

Consequence: The driver might not be able to get around to you. Walk up to the 11th floor (where the road is above) and then call a ride.
