🏛️ What It Is

The Temple of Heaven was the site where ancient Chinese emperors offered sacrifices to Heaven; it was built in the 18th year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty (1420). The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is one of China’s most famous structures—a circular wooden structure with a triple-layered blue glazed tile roof, built on a three-tiered white marble base. In the early morning, you’ll see old Beijingers practicing tai chi, singing opera, and playing chess in the park.

✨ Why Visit

The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is a masterpiece of Chinese architecture. Get up early to visit the Temple of Heaven Park and experience Beijing’s morning exercise culture—Tai Chi, sword dancing, and calligraphy written with water.

Tips for Visitors

Buy the combined ticket; do not buy the park-only ticket

The combined ticket includes access to the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests and the Echo Wall. The park-only ticket only allows you to walk around the outer areas; you cannot enter the core buildings.

Go in the morning to watch the morning exercises

The park opens at 6:00 a.m. If you arrive before 7:00 a.m., you’ll see hundreds of people practicing tai chi, sword dancing, and singing Peking Opera.

Common Mistakes

I bought the park ticket but not the combined ticket

To save money, I only bought the 15-yuan park ticket.

Consequence: I couldn’t get into the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests or the Echo Wall—my trip to Beijing was a total waste.
