The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is the world’s most important institution for giant panda conservation and research, and it is the only place globally where visitors can see dozens of giant pandas (including cubs) at the same time. Spanning 100 hectares, the base simulates the giant pandas’ natural habitat.The main highlights are the Moon Maternity Ward (for newborn cubs) and the Sun Maternity Ward (home to the internet-famous pandas “Hua Hua” and “Ye”). Pandas are most active between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m.

Practical Tips
Rush in as soon as the doors open—don’t wait
Pandas are active in the morning and sleep at noon. Arrive at the entrance before 8:00 AM to line up, and head straight to the Moon Nursery and Sun Nursery as soon as the gates open.
Reverse Tour Starting from the West Gate
Enter through the West Gate → Head first to the Moon Maternity Ward → then the Sun Maternity Ward → followed by the other pavilions. This way, you’ll avoid half the crowds.
The sightseeing bus isn’t necessarily a good deal.
The sightseeing bus costs 30 yuan, but the wait in line can be over half an hour; walking actually offers more flexibility. The complex isn’t that large.
Common Mistakes
❌ Arrive around noon
You won’t arrive at the Panda Base until after 10:00.
Consequences: All the pandas were sleeping; all we could see were motionless “panda balls.”
